Rituals perpetuate power structures; they validate hegemonic institutions and the social structures they sustain. In rituals, myths are retold, established formulas repeated. Rituals are cast in the official language formulated and authenticated by the economic and politically powerful. Here we have images of the May Day ritual in Havana. Many think that American tourists going to the island, access to the Internet, foreign investment, an additional American presence may be a catalyst to democratic reforms. Many hope that diplomatic relations may prove the US the new Cleisthenes to C(K)astros “tyrannos.” That’s the typical American “city on a hill,” vision of self. It is consistent with the notion that American capitalism is a panacea. It has permeated the uncritical Left. Everyone thinks that free trade and investment will solve everything: yes, inequality.
"Rituals perpetuate power structures; they validate hegemonic institutions and the social structures they sustain."
